Blog about Vietnam - Friday, 30 March 2012 - My company organized a one day trip, so I traveled with my colleagues to Thung Nai which is located 100km northwest of Hanoi. Thung Nai means "valley of deer" as deer were coming to this valley in the old days. When Hòa Bình hydropower plant was built in the 1980s, the valley became a reservoir. The mountains were partly submerged in the water and they became islands, as a result the landscape is similar to Hạ Long bay. 

We left Hanoi at 7am and back to the city at 7:30pm. When we arrived at Thung Nai commune, we rented a boat (about US$60) and cruised on the reservoir. We visited a couple of temples and I saw some interesting things there. Along the way to the temples, the Mường and Dzao ethnic minority people sold some local specialities such as fishes which were caught in the reservoir, and herbs. The fish or chicken is put between two halves of bamboo sticks and baked over a wood fire.

accident, so our visit to the cave had to be cancelled. We cruised back to Thung Nai and moved on to the next site which is the main dam and tunnel of Hòa Bình hydropower plant. It was interesting to stand on the main dam and see both the reservoir where we had cruised during the day and downstream of the Đà river. We bought sightseeing tickets and followed a local guide toward one of the four tunnels. 

Hòa Bình hydropower plant used to be the biggest one in northern Vietnam, but in recent years another larger scaled hydropower plant in Sơn La province (also in the North West of Vietnam) has been built. Even though Hòa Bình hydropower plant is the second largest plant at present, it was a symbol of Vietnam and Russia friendship, as Russia had assisted us in building this plant. It took 23 years (1971-1994) since the first survey was made until the final hydro turbine generator was put into operation. We saw the generator room at the end of the tunnel. There are 8 generators but the huge turbines are underground. The reason for placing all the generators inside a mountain was to avoid bombing. When the hydropower plant was planned to be built, northern Vietnam was still experiencing the war against Americans (1971-1975).

As we didn't have much time and my colleagues are not interested in the ethnic minority people, I missed the chance to visit Bản Mu and Bản Mỗ which are two villages of the Mường ethnic minority people. I saw Bản Mỗ village with many stilt houses on the way to Thung Nai, but I couldn't get out of the mini bus. 80% of the local people living in Thung Nai are the Mường ethnic minority people. However, they can speak Vietnamese and wear same like Vietnamese. A Mường ethnic woman told me they only wear traditional dresses on two occassions which are Tết (lunar new year) and the Independence Day (2nd September). 

Both Thung Nai and the power plant were new to me and I liked the beautiful landscapes, even though the weather was not good and some of my photos looked pretty dark.

Travel tips: If you cannot rent a car with driver, you can take a bus from Hanoi to Hòa Bình city. Thung Nai is only 25km away from this city. The last 20km is winding and narrow along the mountains.

Nhân dịp công ty tổ chức đi du lịch một ngày, tôi và các đồng nghiệp quyết định chọn Thung Nai vì đây là điểm đến mới mẻ đối với tất cả mọi người. Thung Nai nằm ở hướng tây bắc, cách Hà Nội 100km, trong đó có 20km cuối cùng đường hẹp và khá ngoằn ngoèo. Chúng tôi khởi hành vào lúc 7 giờ sáng và về đến Hà Nội vào lúc 7 giờ rưỡi tối. Với khoảng thời gian ngắn ngủi đó, chúng tôi chỉ kịp đến thăm Thung Nai và nhà máy thủy điện Hòa Bình. Đây cũng là lần đầu tiên tôi đến hai địa danh này. 

Thung Nai có nghĩa là "thung lũng của nai" vì vào thời xa xưa nai về đây hàng bầy. Khi thủy điện Hòa Bình xây xong, nước sông Đà ngập lên tận lưng chừng những đỉnh núi và tạo nên các đảo nhỏ rất đẹp. Phong cảnh ở đây cũng giống như Vịnh Hạ Long. Khi chúng tôi đến Thung Nai, một người đàn ông đứng ở bến thuyền gợi ý chúng tôi đặt ăn trưa trên đảo với giá tiền là 500.000 đồng/mâm.

Chúng tôi quyết định đặt cơm trưa luôn. Sau đó, cả đoàn thuê một chiếc tàu giá 1.200.000 đồng. Tour thăm quan bằng thuyền bao gồm hai đền và một hang động. Sau khi đi thuyền một lát, chúng tôi tới Đền chúa Thác Bờ. Bên ngoài đền có nhiều người đang nướng cá để bán cho khách du lịch. Ngôi đền tiếp theo cũng có tên là Đền thờ chúa Thác Bờ. Tôi hỏi một chị người Mường thì chị trả lời là ngôi đền đầu tiên gọi là Đền Trình, và ngôi đền thứ hai mới là đền chính. Nếu đứng từ trên thuyền mà nhìn hai ngôi đền này thì rất chán vì các công trình phụ xây dựng lô nhô che mất cả ngôi đền. Dọc đường lên đền chính cũng có bán rất nhiều cá nướng mà bắt được tại hồ sông Đà. Ngoài ra, ở đây còn có bán cả các loại cây thuốc của người dân tộc Dzao. Một điều thú vị là Thung Nai thuộc huyện Cao Phong, nhưng hai ngôi đền mà chúng tôi đến thăm bằng thuyền thì lại thuộc huyện Đà Bắc.

Chúng tôi ăn trưa trên đảo Dừa. Đây là một khu nghỉ dưỡng do tư nhân đầu tư, cũng có các bungalow, nên có thể nghỉ lại qua đêm. Tôi rất thích view nhìn từ bãi cát của đảo Dừa. Xung quanh là những hòn đảo với màu nước xanh trong. Đến 3 giờ chiều, cậu bé lái tàu gọi chúng tôi quay lại thuyền để về Thung Nai. Cậu rất lo lắng vì có người gọi điện thoại và nói là thời tiết rất xấu, sắp có mưa giông và gió lớn, nếu đi thì có thể bị lật thuyền. Chúng tôi quyết định chờ một lát và khi thời tiết tốt hơn, cả đoàn quay lại bến thuyền. Cậu bé lái thuyền quyết định hủy thăm quan động. 

Chúng tôi lên xe quay về Hòa Bình và đến thăm nhà máy thủy điện Hòa Bình. Xe leo lên đập chính và từ đây chúng tôi có thể nhìn thấy cả hồ chứa nước và vùng hạ lưu sông Đà. Sau khi mua vé thăm quan, cả đoàn theo chân cô hướng dẫn viên đi qua đường hầm để vào nơi đặt các tổ máy. Ở cuối đường hầm là căn phòng lớn có đặt 8 tổ máy, nhưng các tuốc bin khổng lồ thì lại đặt ngầm ở dưới đất. Mất 23 năm để xây dựng nhà máy thủy điện Hòa Bình (từ 1971-1994) với sự giúp đỡ của Liên Xô.

Các tổ máy được đặt bên trong núi để tránh bom, vì khi khảo sát xây dựng nhà máy này, miền bắc vẫn đang trong thời gian chiến tranh. Hiện nay, nhà máy thủy điện Sơn La có quy mô lớn nhất Việt Nam với công suất là 2.400 Mega Wat, lớn hơn nhà máy thủy điện Hòa Bình 500 Mega Wat.

Một điều tôi cảm thấy tiếc là không được đến thăm bản Mu và bản Mỗ của người dân tộc Mường ở Thung Nai. Trên đường đến Thung Nai, tôi đã nhìn thấy bản Mỗ với những ngôi nhà sàn và ruộng bậc thang, nhưng tôi không thể tự đi theo ý mình. Mọi người trong đoàn cũng không quan tâm đến các bản dân tộc và chúng tôi cũng không có nhiều thời gian.

Một chị người Mường nói với tôi là người dân tộc Mường chỉ mặc trang phục dân tộc vào ngày Tết và ngày 2/9. Khoảng 80% người dân ở Thung Nai là người Mường, nhưng họ nói tiếng Việt và mặc giống người Việt. Chỉ khi nói chuyện với nhau thì họ mới nói tiếng dân tộc. 

Với hai điểm đến mới mẻ trong chuyến hành trình ngắn ngủi này, tôi đã có những trải nghiệm thú vị. Tôi thích các phong cảnh của tỉnh Hòa Bình. Giá như trời nắng đẹp thì ảnh chụp phong cảnh của tôi trông sẽ sáng hơn.
