67th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day

Vietnam Information - Today marks the 67th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day.
67 years ago, President Ho Chi Minh read out the country’s Declaration of Independence in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Squareon September 2, 1945, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietna
m (now Socialist Republic of Việt Nam), and announcing that Vietnam had the right to enjoy independence and freedom.

On the morning of September 2, 1945, nearly 500,000 well-dressed people converged on Ba Dinh Square, waiting for the declaration proclaiming the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. They happily packed the streets leading to Ba Dinh Square, hanging up slogans written in Vietnamese, English, French, Chinese and Russian. The slogans read: “The Vietnamese nation is for the Vietnamese”, “Independence or Death” and “Support President Ho Chi Minh”.

At 14.00, President Ho and other officials from the provisional government took the stage in historic Ba Dinh Square. Hundreds of thousands of people looked up at the red flag with the five-pointed golden star flying as the band was playing the national anthem. They were standing there, hand in hand, showing their determination and iron will to defend their nation’s independence and freedom.

During this sacred moment, on behalf of the newly established provisional government, President Ho read out the Declaration of Independence and stated that the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born.

The Declaration read, “All the peoples on earth are equal from birth. All the peoples have the right to live and to be happy and free..... A people who have courageously opposed French enslavement for more than 80 years, a people who have resolutely sided with the Allies against the fascists over the last few years, must be free! Such a people must be independent!.... Vietnam has the right to enjoy freedom and independence and now it has become a free and independent country. The entire Vietnamese people are determined to mobilise all their physical and spiritual strength and will sacrifice their lives and property in order to safeguard their freedom and independence.”

The August 1945 Revolution and the birth of the modern Việt Nam are great victories of intelligence, iron stuff and indomitability of the Vietnamese nation, under the sound leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam with President Ho Chi Minh as its leader.
They were also the choice of the Vietnamese people, after decades of searching for a suitable way for national liberation. They were the results of consecutive revolutionary campaigns over 15 years since the establishment of the Communist Party of Vietnam

September 2, 1945 went down in history as the first day of the independent Vietnamese nation, which had been ruled by the French colonialists for almost 100 years. It acknowledged the victory of a nation that pioneered the national liberation movement for oppressed nations around the world.
It opened up a new chapter in the course of the nation’s history. For the first time, Vietnamese people were proud to be citizens of their own free and independent nation.
It also ushered in a new era, as from then on the Vietnamese people had to endure two wars of resistance while taking great pains to defend the fledgling administration and reconstruct the war-torn country.

To achieve national independence and freedom, the Vietnamese nation conducted a long war of resistance against French colonialists which ended with a glorious victory at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. This shook the world and contributed to the collapse of the colonial system around the world.
To protect national independence and freedom, the Vietnamese nation once again made a historic march along the Truong Son mountain range, using every effort in their fight southwards in the war against the Americans to wipe out the invaders and unify the country. The valliant struggle of the Vietnamese nation against imperialism won the support and sentiment of peaceful and justice-loving people throughout the world and birthed and promoted a world movement against the American war in Vietnam. Vietnam was considered to be quite right by defending itself and this act defined a turning point in world opinion. The defeat of the American air offensive in the North of Vietnam at the end of 1972 forced the US administration to sign the Paris Agreement and the 1975 spring victory unified the country which fulfilled the wishes of President Ho Chi Minh, totally liberate the southern region and reunifying the country, to have a unified and independent country once again.

Ever since then the Vietnamese people have enjoyed independence and freedom and the immortal spirit of the Declaration is always in their minds.
The Vietnamese people won a glorious victory of national unification in the protracted resistance war against foreign aggressors for 30 years, experiencing ups and downs during the development cause of the economy.

From a poor and backward country, Vietnam has now become a middle-income country with a sustainable and strong political system as well as a responsible member in the international arena.

At present, in the process of international economic integration and given the great and important achievements, Vietnam now faces new opportunities and challenges in its efforts to protect national independence and freedom.
Although having been defeated on the battlefield, hostile forces do not give up with their wicked intentions and continue their smokeless war against the Vietnamese revolution, the State and the country’s journey towards socialism. The imperialists have never given up on their goal of defeating socialist-oriented countries.

Regardless to changes in the international arena, national independence and freedom remains valuable and sacred to every nation in the world because “all people are born equal, only the creator gives this and no one has the right to dominate another. Everyone has the right to live and enjoy freedom and happiness”. Generations of Vietnamese people have been patriotic and have shown an iron will to protect national independence and freedom.
National independence lays a firm foundation for socialism, and that only socialism can help consolidate and bring into full play the fruits of national independence, driving the nation forward.
The entire Party, the people and the army decide to unite in a single bloc and embark on a path of national independence closely linked to socialism, a socialism that continues to evolve by being overhauled, creative and modern.

Communist Party of Vietnam live glory !
Socialist Republic of Vietnam eternal !
There is nothing more precious than independence and freedom !
