Located on the Mekong Delta, Long An is surrounded by Tay Ninh Province and Cambodia on the north, Ho Chi Minh City on east, Tien Giang Province on the south and Dong Thap Province on the west. Long An is divided into smaller areas by a complex network of rives and canals. Silt from Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay rives has raised the level of the field of Long An. This silt makes a good condition for agriculture. The terrain is quite flat except some hills and mounds on the north. The western area belongs to the Plain of Reeds.
Situated 47km from Ho Chi Minh City,
Long An is the gate of Mekong River delta with fertile soil spreading
over the Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay river’basins.
In the drought – stricken years, the
Long An pepple usually organize rain begging festivals, offering
ceremonies to God. On these occasions, the tourists will witness boat
races on the canals, dragon processions, deity worshipping and many
other outstanding cultural activities.
Long An attracts tourists mainly for its
Oc Eo culture. The group of art and archeological vestiges comprise 26
golden objects discovered in Go Xoai. The tomb and altar in worship of
Nguyen Huynh Duc is the historical vestige having the most ancient
architectural assemblage of Long An with has retained original antiques
2000 year ago. Visiting the 120-column house, you will be greatly
delighted with the meticulous engraving art, the interior decoration
with flowers and birds and the subtle mixture of sculpture in the three
parts (north, center, south) of the country.
