A representative from the Consular Department of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested that China investigate recent incidents in which several Chinese ships chased and damaged two Vietnamese fishing boats in Vietnam’s waters.
The request was made by the representative after the Vietnamese diplomat handed over a diplomatic note to a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi on March 17.
Since the beginning of this year, Chinese ships have prevented, chased and damaged some Vietnamese fishing vessels operating at their traditional fishing grounds around Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago in the East Sea, the Consular Department said.
One of such cases occurred at 2:45 pm on January 7, when fishing boat QNg 90055 TS of central Quang Ngai Province with seven fishermen on board was run after by a Chinese vessel coded 1239.
The Chinese side then smashed assets on the Vietnamese fishing boat.
In another case, China’s fishery administration ship, Yu Zheng 02, stopped QNg 96074 TS, another fishing ship of Quang Ngai, with 12 fishermen on board on March 1.
Some of the assets on the Vietnamese fishing boat were confiscated by the Chinese ship.
The diplomatic note reads, “These actions violated Vietnam’s sovereignty, and sovereign and jurisdiction rights in the East Sea, intruded upon property, and infringed upon the legitimate interests of Vietnamese fishermen.”
It also emphasizes that these actions ran counter to the common perception the two countries’ high-ranking leaders had agreed on regarding the humanitarian treatment of fishermen.
The Chinese side was requested to pay compensation to the Vietnamese fishermen on these vessels and not to repeat similar actions in the future, according to the Vietnamese representative.
