General Võ Nguyên Giáp

Today, August 25th marks the 101nd birthday of the Comrade General Võ Nguyên Giáp, who is reputed as a talented commander and is respected worldwide. One of our Comrades proudly said that “For everybody, the General is a typical revolutionary leader, a brilliant commander, a scholar and a talented warrior, a creative and ingenious strategist, a leading military ideologist and an outstanding organiser in the Hồ Chí Minh Era. He is a very prestigious General domestically and internationally".

General Giáp is the longest-living person in the military history of Vietnam. Comrade is the most outstanding military leader beside President Ho Chi Minh. Comrade became the first General of the Vietnam People’s Army , when he was 37.

Comrade was born on August 25, 1911 in the village of An Xa, Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province in the year of Tan Hoi, when the Tan Hoi Revolution broke out in China . As a poor little boy of the country with “west wind, white sand”, he went to school, grew up, joined the revolutionary movement, and became an outstanding general of the Vietnamese Revolution. His life and career has been closely linked to the history of formation, growth and development of the Vietnam People’s Army. Comrade was an excellent and close disciple of late President Ho Chi Minh, and a close comrade-in-arms of the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam.

General Giáp’s life has closely associated with the Vietnamese people’s struggle for national liberation as well as the founding and establishment of the Vietnam People’s Army.

Comrade had major role of the brilliant military leader in building the Vietnamese army and turning Vietnam into one of the first countries that combined the people’s war with the political struggle to fulfill the goal of national independence and liberation.

The importantest milestones in his commanding career with the peak being the 1954 Dien Bien Phu Campaign against the French colonialists and then the protracted anti-US resistance war for national reunification.

Marcel Bigeard, a famous general of the French army, as saying that General Giáp commanded his army to experience from this victory to the other over the past 30 years. It was an unprecedented exploit.

The book Great Military Leaders and Their Campaigns by Jeremy Black published in the UK in 2008 lists Giáp among the 59 greatest military leaders of all time along with Mao Zedong and Genghis Khan.

General Võ Nguyên Giáp was the commander in the Indochina War (1946-1954) and the Vietnam War (1960-1975). Comrade took part in numerous important and decisive campaigns such as the Fall-Winter Border Campaign in 1950, the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954, the Tet Campaign in 1968 and the Ho Chi Minh Campaign.
In 1975, General Giáp’s order inspired the whole army so that the South was liberated and the country was unified.

Comrade Võ Nguyên Giáp is called "Man of the people" (CPV) , "the legendary soldier" ( Cuban newspaper Gran-ma ) , "legendary General" ( Clarin, Argentina 's daily ) , "strategist of freedom" ( Daniel Roussel, l’Humanité), but we used to tenderly call "General".

Moreover, for those who daily work along with a great but simple person, he is the “Brother Văn” forever. ( Văn is Comrade 's alias )
