DK1 Oil Rig Protection Posts

The system of DK1 oil rig protection posts are considered “artificial islands” on the sea and courageous marine soldiers are the islanders who protect the sea on the southern continental shelf.

DK1 is the name of an Economics - science - service block which was constructed for science research, oil exploration, hydrometorology and also a food, water and fuel supplier, and for protection of the nation’s sovereignty.
The 450 ton-Ship HQ624 took us and a delegation of cadres and soldiers to visit DK1 oil rig protection posts on the occasion of Tet (traditional Lunar New Year). Captain Le Dinh Viet, Vice Chairman of Politics of the B Regional Command of the Navy said: “The visit shows the comradeship between comrades and the deep sentiment of people nationwide for the protection posts.” For Dinh Viet and the crew’s members, it was the return visit to their “home” where they have only ever worked.

Despite bad weather and heavy sea with 3-4m high waves, the ships still crossed the sea to transport Tet commodities to the oil rig protection posts. Here, the marine soldiers used cables to transport Tet communities and sent New Year’s greetings to their comrades by walkie-talkie.

A soldier is ready to protect the nation's sovereignty.
On a day of calm hardly seen in the sea, we had a chance to visit soldiers on the DK1/15 oil rig protection post. Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Trung Dung, the Deputy Commander of the DK1/15 cheerfully said: “In 3 years, we have just received one guest delegation so you will welcome Tet early with us”. All the flavors of Tet were seen here. They even had all the materials for making Chung cake like Dong (phrynium) leaves, green beans, pork and glutinous rice which were sent from the main land. Sub-lieutenant Nguyen Minh Hong said: “Thanks to the care and attention of people nationwide, we seem to have all we need for Tet, such as Chung cakes, meat and sweets and do not have a feeling of shortage”.

Before we left the post, Commodore Nguyen Cong The, Deputy Political Commissar of the B Regional Command of the Navy said: “The cadres, soldiers and staffs on the DK1 oil rig protection posts promise to make the effort to protect the sovereignty of the nation.”
