The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned China’s illegal
construction work on Gac Ma (Johnson South Reef) in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands as a “serious violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty.”
During a press briefing held Thursday, MOFA spokesman Le
Hai Binh said Vietnam had sufficient legal and historical proof to
assert its sovereignty over Truong Sa.
Unilateral action intending to change the status quo in
this area seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty and complicated the
East Sea and regional situation, he added.
Recently, a BBC report documented a Chinese project to
dredge tons of rock and sand from the sea floor to pump into the Johnson
South Reef.
The works appear to have been going on for months, according to BBC.
In May the Philippines released photos that appeared to
show Chinese land reclamation efforts on Johnson South Reef, saying
China appeared to be building an airstrip.
When asked about the recent anti-Vietnam demonstrations in
Cambodia, MOFA spokesman Binh said Vietnam has continuously called upon
the Cambodian authorities to implement measures to prevent illegal
actions, which prove to be inconsistent with the traditional friendship
between the two countries
