HA NOI (VNS) - Viet Nam urgently requests China to immediately end
its construction projects on the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago and
refrain from illegal activities in the future.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Hai Binh made the request yesterday in
response to China's illegal construction projects on Chu Thap (Cross)
Rocks, part of Viet Nam's Truong Sa archipelago.
"Viet Nam has full legal and historical evidence proving its sovereignty over the archipelagos of Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa," he said.
China's above-mentioned activities violated Viet Nam's sovereignty over Truong Sa, infringed on international law and ran counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), as well as the agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues between the two countries, he said.
They also upset the status quo, caused tensions and complicated the situation further, harming peace and stability in the region, he added.
"Viet Nam resolutely opposes these illegal acts and demands the Chinese side respect its sovereignty and strictly observe the DOC," Binh reiterated.
Representatives of the Foreign Ministry met with representatives of the Chinese Embassy in Ha Noi to present the note of opposition.
Yesterday, Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang also said Viet Nam had legal and historical evidence proving its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in response to reporters' queries on the extent of Viet Nam's activities on its two archipelagos in the East Sea.
She said Viet Nam had spoken about its viewpoints on the issue numerous times.
"All activities conducted by Viet Nam were within the country's sovereignty and in accordance with international law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC)," she stated.
Regarding Viet Nam's participation in the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing from November 9-11 and the ASEAN Summit in Myanmar on November 12, Hang said it would make positive contributions to the maintenance of peace, stability, maritime and aviation security and safety in the East Sea.
In response to questions on Viet Nam's stand on Taiwan's illegal survey work on Ba Binh island in the Truong Sa archipelago, Hang said: "Any actions by other parties in these territories without the permission of Viet Nam are regarded as illegal and will encounter strong protest."
